Day assignment editor, International Desk. Assigned, coordinated and edited breaking news coverage worldwide. Planned daily and enterprise reporting and editing in collaboration with sister news hubs in Seoul and London. Helped plan and edit coverage of the wars in Israel-Gaza and Ukraine, which won Pulitzer Prizes for international reporting in 2024 and 2023. Reviewed the desk’s news, feature and investigative articles for quality, and helped direct the department’s online and print production. Served previously as the desk’s night editor.

Editorial director. Responsible for all digital and print publications for a nonprofit organization that advocates on behalf of journalists attacked, imprisoned, and harassed worldwide. Led a four-person editorial department. Oversaw cpj.org, its blogs and research databases, the organization’s social media networks, and CPJ investigative reports.
- Edited the CPJ Journalist Security Guide, an interactive manual for journalists working in dangerous conditions worldwide. Published in 2012 in iBook, eReader, and other digital formats.
- Edited the 2010 investigative report Silence or Death in Mexico’s Press, which prompted passage of a Mexican constitutional amendment to combat anti-press crime, and Anatomy of Injustice, a 2009 investigation that led Russian authorities to reopen several unsolved journalist murder cases. Edited dozens of other in-depth reports, including the 2013 investigation, Roots of Impunity: Pakistan’s Endangered Press.
- Oversaw creation of a 2,000-page database of journalists killed on duty. The database, which went online in 2009, is the most comprehensive archive of journalist fatalities in the world.
- Worked with editors, staff researchers, and freelance contributors to produce daily website reports, blog entries and social media postings on international freedom of expression issues
- Oversaw research, writing, and editing of Attacks on the Press, an analysis of press conditions worldwide that was published annually in paperback and online editions.
- Managed development of a new organization website in 2008, which led to a four-fold increase in traffic. Created blogs on journalist security, freedom of expression, and digital issues.

New York City news editor. Oversaw coverage of New York City and the metropolitan area, leading a staff of 25 reporters and editors. Assigned and edited stories for national and international audiences.
- Helped direct AP’s coverage of the September 11 attack; the crash of American Airlines Flight 587; the millennium and embassy bombing terrorist trials; the blackout of August 2003; and the financial crimes trials of Martha Stewart and others.

Bureau chief. Led a 20-person staff in producing news, feature and investigative coverage of three Connecticut counties. Oversaw content of three daily, zoned editions.
- Edited the series “Deadly Restraint,” an investigation into the abusive treatment of mental health patients nationwide. The series led to federal reforms.
